The death of a loved one, loss of friends, and separation from a significant other can also lead to high levels of stress when not dealt with properly. Aside from the bad stressors, which are stated above, there are also good stressors, which are the ones that make us fell happy and excited, and challenged positively.

Examples of this are joining the varsity team, running for student council, entering a contest, or winning a competition. People who experience stress may constantly feel pressured, harasses, and hurried. Some of the physical symptoms of stress are headaches, nervousness, rashes, stomachaches, fast heartbeat, perspiration, and increased urination. Some signs of mental stress include lack of concentration, forgetfulness, drop in school performance, and carelessness.

Boredom, anger outburst, nightmares, depression, withdrawal syndrome, and anxiety attacks are the common emotional signs of stress. If you have signs of stress very often, it is better to do something about it so you can improve your quality of life. Prolonged and unwanted stress can have undesirable effects on mental and physical health; although reactions may differ form each individual. A number of stress-related disorders that are known are heart disease, depression, and high blood pressure or hypertension, which can damage the kidneys and can lead to stroke.

Respiratory disorders can also be affected by stress. Most common of theses is asthma, which may cause emotional upsets. Commonly appearing stress related bodily disorders are-peptic ulcers, hypertension, chronic fatigue, hormonal changes, increased heart rate, difficulty in breathing, numbness of limbs, heart disease and reduction in immunity, etc. Anxiety, depression, hopelessness, helplessness, anger, nervousness, irritability, tension and boredom may be experienced.

Decreasing efficiency, making mistakes, inability to take decisions, under eating or overeating, sleeplessness, increased smoking, develop addiction to alcohol and drugs, forgetfulness, hypersensitivity or passiveness, accident proneness and interpersonal difficulties are seen. Stress is linked to disorders such as cancer and heart disorders. There are several mediating variables that determine whether stress becomes dangerous or not.

For example, good coping mechanisms which can help to reduce stress, having good social support, often help in reducing stress. Perception of stress or how a person views stress is also very important.

For example, a person may not perceive a situation as stressful whereas the same situation may be perceived as highly stressful by some other person. Personality character like hardiness or emotional stability helps to withstand effects of stress. Hans Selye, a renowned biological scientist defines stress as the nonspecific response of the body to any demand upon it.

It is an emergency response of the body. In this stage prompt responses of the body, many of them mediated by the sympathetic nervous system, prepare us to cope with the stressor here and now. If the stressor continues to be present, the stage of resistance begins, wherein the body resists the effects of the continuous stressor.

During this stage certain hormonal responses of the body are an important line of defence in resisting the effects of stressors For example, release of ACTH.

The person will no longer be able to face stressor and he will finally succumb to it. The person may develop psychosomatic illness. The stress leads to many psychosomatic diseases. Treatment for such diseases involves medical help for the physical problems and, at the same time, attention to the psychological factors producing the stress.

There are different ways of coping with stress such as: Toxic stress impairs the connection of brain circuits resulting in development of a smaller brain. Prolonged period of stress in children affects their nervous and immune system. Stress hormones are released when a child is exposed to stress. Cortisol hormones, which are released as a result of stress, suppress the body immune system. This leaves a person vulnerable to diseases and infections. Depression, alcoholism, eating disorders, and chronic diseases are also linked to childhood stress.

Psychological effects of stress include changes in personality, aggressiveness, and irritability. Children under stress are likely to experience frustrations and isolation from friends and family. They spend more time on their own and lack motivation. Children may also have difficulty in concentration thereby affecting their academic performance. Children under extreme stress exhibit change in behavior. They may be more disobedient, fight often, stutter, and cry often. In conclusion, stress in children has many causes and effects.

The notion that stress only affects adults is wrong. Too much stress, often referred to as toxic stress, is detrimental to the life of a child.

Toxic stress affects the physical, emotional, psychological, and social aspects of a child. Even though every child reacts differently under stress, it is clear that stress affects the neural system and the health of a child.

Children under stress tend to develop negative characteristics like irritability and disobedience. Research has indicated that there are number of causes of childhood stress which are interrelated.
